Copycat Wing Recipes. Hooters Buffalo And KFC Honey BBQ.

This is the first time I have ever deep-fried wings at home.

What a revelation!

I’ve made ‘oven-fried’ wings a bunch of times (like these and these) and they are really good. However, the super-crisp and delectable coating on both of today’s recipes can really only be obtained in a fryer.

I haven’t been to Hooters in over 20 years, but I remember their wings as being fantastic and figured a copycat recipe was worth a try.

While I had the deep fryer pulled out, I also decided to make KFC’s Honey BBQ wings.

I served both sets of wings during this year’s Super Bowl. Hot and spicy alongside sweet and smokey was wing heaven.

Hooters Buffalo Wings Copycat Recipe

Ingredients:

Vegetable oil, for frying
4 tablespoons butter
1/4 cup hot sauce
Dash ground pepper
Dash garlic powder
1/2 cup flour
1/4 teaspoon paprika
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/4 teaspoon salt
10 chicken wings, cut into thirds and wing tips discarded (There is a good tutorial on how to do this here.)
Blue cheese dressing
Celery sticks

Directions:

1. Pour 2 inches of oil into deep fryer and heat to 375℉.

2. In small saucepan, melt butter over low heat. Add hot sauce, black pepper and garlic powder. Stir until well mixed.

3. In a gallon size zip-type bag, mix flour, paprika, cayenne pepper and salt.

4. Rinse chicken wings under cold water and drain excess water. Drop wings into bag a few at a time, shaking to coat after each addition. When all wings have been coated, remove from bag and place on wax paper-lined tray. Refrigerate at least 1 hour to help set coating.

5. Preheat oven to 400℉.

6. Carefully lower a few wings at a time into oil. Fry 15 minutes or until light brown. Drain wings on paper towels and repeat with remaining wings.

7. Place cooked wings in large ovenproof bowl or baking pan. Pour sauce over wings and stir to coat thoroughly.

8. Bake wings in oven 5 minutes. Serve with celery sticks and blue cheese dressing on the side.

A big batch of wings seems just the thing to serve with today’s Trick Bird.

“Window” is the title track from last year’s EP by UK-based band Trick Bird. It’s a soft, dreamy little number.

Check out Trick Bird on the band’s Website where you can link to buy their music.

Cheers!
