School’s Back In Session. I’ll Drink To That. Cocktail Time.

Today was the first day of school for my four kids.

Normally, I’d be dancing around the house, blasting music and yet reveling in the kind of silence that only being home alone can provide.

Nope, not today.

Instead of inviting my friends over for a midday cocktail toast, I spent 6 hours at the local medical center bringing my daughter to various appointments. She has some unexplained fluid in her knees that we’ve been trying to figure out the cause of since February.

Anyway, hopefully after today’s tests we’ll get an answer soon.

Enough about that. Let’s Drink!!

I love to try new cocktail recipes. Here are a few different ones that I’ve tried recently and really liked. The Classic Martini is not new. But, it just might be the go to drink after a day like today!

I really liked this Raspberry Lager. Beer goes remarkably well with berries. Who knew?

Raspberry Lager

Ingredients:

2 cups raspberries, fresh and chilled
1 1/2 cups Chambord or other raspberry liqueur
8 (12 ounce) bottles dark lager beer, chilled
Fresh raspberries to garnish (optional)

Directions:

1. Freeze eight 16 oz beer glasses or mugs for at least 2 hours.

2. In a large pitcher combine 2 cups raspberries and the Chambord and muddle with a wooden spoon.

3. Pour beer over raspberry mixture. Stir gently to combine.

4. Serve in the frosted glasses. If desired, thread additional raspberries onto small picks or skewers and place into drinks as a garnish.

Have you been to the Vodka section in the liquor store recently? Holy Russian Water!

There are so many different flavors of vokda out there. I’ve been meaning to try the Whipped Cream variety forever.

Sweet!

I saw this Birthday Cake Martini on Pinterest and immediately added it to my Must Make This Board. Must make this again!

Birthday Cake Martini

1/2 ounce champagne (I used a mini bottle since I only needed such a small amount. Photo below.)
Sprinkles or non-pareils to rim glass

1. Rim glass with Sprinkles (Use marshmallow creme or cake frosting to help make them stick).

2. Combine vodka and cranberry juice in an ice shaker, half-filled with ice cubes. Shake well. Strain into glass.

  1. I’ll take one of each, please! Actually, I’m not much for gin. Can I change that one to Grey Goose? Wait, you are taking orders, right? I could never make anything that pretty myself… ;-)

  2. OMG, I missed the Nouvelle Vague part. I love them! I always have the skip the TDTF track when I’m listening when the kids are in the kitchen/car.

    Have you seen this?: http://youtu.be/PN0QZiK3Luo

    • HaHa! When I was checking out their FB page I saw that you were my only friend to like the band and wondered if you would notice the song.

I also know what it is like to quickly change a risque song when there are little ears in the car! Sometimes I forget and they have to remind me “Um…this is inappropriate.”

You know what? I have not seen that video. I’ve seen this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TtoGclevNzs which is also Bande à part. How many are there out there? :)

      • That one’s cool, too! I was always impressed at how well the dancing in the B-a-P scene matched the beat of “Dance with Me,” though.

My kids all know the words to “Baby Got Back,” which is probably not something I should admit in public, but I’ve come to terms with it. But, “Too Drunk…” might be pushing it. (I also had to get creative when trying to explain what Lady Gaga was referring to in terms of her “muffin” to the littlest one.)

        Do you know Pomplamoose (sic)?

        • Not familiar with Pomplamoose. I bookmarked the video page to have a listen after the MOUNTAIN of back to school paperwork is completed….with martini in hand, of course.

          • Holy paperwork! You weren’t kidding; I think I have carpal tunnel syndrome now. Now I REALLY need one of those drinks.

I like Pomplamoose’s covers best (e.g., Single Ladies, September), but some of their original songs are good, too (e.g., If You Think You Need Some Lovin’).

Have you heard Fiona Apple’s new album???
